Casey Michael Henry / English

Graduate Student Researcher
2010 – 2011

Project: Jail of Mountjoy

Casey Michael Henry received his Ph.D. in English from The Graduate Center in 2016. His interests include post-45 American fiction, media studies, and computational approaches to literature.

His project for the New Media Lab, entitled Jail of Mountjoy, interprets the patterns of linguistic density in Finnegans Wake as music by “reading” the categories of reference in Roland McHugh’s spatially arranged Annotations in different octaves. The project aurally evidences the book’s underlying structure as a cycle of sleep, which passes through periods of frenzy and passivity signalled through increased or decreased levels of referentiality and obscurity. The sounds also tonally highlight submerged rhythms in Joyce’s prose.
