Philip is a doctoral candidate in political science at the Graduate Center and adjunct instructor at Hunter College. He studies Latin America and the U.S., with a focus on crime and violence. His dissertation project examines criminal communication in Mexico. During research trips in 2017, 2018, and 2019, he assembled a database of over 6,000 “narco-messages” that appeared in the country between 2004 and 2013. His field research also involves interviews in Mexico City and Cuernavaca.
Philip joined the New Media Lab in 2019, with the goal of develop means of visualizing and sharing his analysis of narco-messages with a broader audience. He is starting out by mapping the appearance of these messages.
