Paul Fess is a doctoral candidate at the CUNY Graduate Center specializing in 19th-century American literature, African American literature, sound studies, and print culture. He is currently working on his dissertation, “Resonant Texts: The Politics and Practices of 19th-century African American Musical Cultures of Print from Abolitionism to the Player Piano” and as an assistant to the NEH-funded Institute, “City of Print.”
