A Nobel Prize was recently awarded for the discovery of high-temperature superconducting materials. These new materials allow for the resistanceless flow of electricity below a certain temperature and have many practical applications in power generation and transmission, medical devices, communications and computers. In these superconductors the motion of vortices determines its properties and behavior. 3D animation and visualization of the tornado-like swirl of electrons are being used to understand and fabricate better superconductors.
